Our Process

What Does An Evaluation Look Like?

Think of a comprehensive evaluation as a map of your brain’s terrain, identifying the smooth paths and the steep climbs so we can find the best route forward. We look at:

Discussing your history, your goals, and the questions that brought you to us.

Using standardized questions assessing your knowledge, how you approach puzzles, and other tasks to understand your problem-solving style and how you process information.

Looking at reading, writing, and math to see where things feel smooth and where they get more challenging.

Exploring things like attention, memory, and how you manage big emotions or social situations.

Gathering input from the people who know you (or your child) best… parents, teachers, and, most importantly, you.

What's Included?

We want you to feel supported from the first phone call to the final meeting. A full evaluation typically includes:

Initial Consultation
A quick chat to make sure we’re the right fit for you.
Clinical Interview
A deep dive into your history and current needs.
Face-to Face Sessions
Usually 8–12 hours of interactive activities. Don't worry, we break this into several sessions with plenty of snacks and movement breaks!
Your Personalized Blueprint
A comprehensive report that translates scores into real-world strategies
Feedback Meetings
One for the adults, and (if appropriate) a separate, kid-friendly meeting for the child so they can understand their own superpowers and challenges.
Advocacy
We can also attend school or CSE meetings to help ensure your child gets the support they deserve.

A Note to Parents

Partnering in Your Child’s Journey

As a parent in New York, you are likely navigating a whirlwind of expectations; from school meetings and specialist referrals to the simple desire for your child to feel confident and happy. Whether your child is five or fifteen, you aren’t just looking for a label; you’re looking for a way to help them thrive. The system can feel overwhelming. At Horizons, we view our role as more than just testing. We are here to help you translate your intuition as a parent into a concrete, actionable plan.

We look beyond what is difficult for your child to find what makes them shine. Our reports highlight their strengths alongside their support needs.

We don’t leave you at the finish line. From attending CSE meetings to navigating OPWDD applications, we help ensure the results of our evaluation actually reach the people who can make a difference in your child’s daily life.

We prioritize your child’s comfort. Our goal is for them to leave our sessions feeling empowered and understood, rather than “examined.”

Our suggestions aren’t just clinical theories, they are practical strategies designed to work in a busy NYC household and classroom.

You are your child's best advocate. We are here to provide the data and the support to help you lead the way!

A Note for Young Adults

Exploring Your Own Path

If you are a young adult navigating college or grad school, starting a career, or simply trying to understand why certain things feel harder for you than they do for others, you’re in the right place.

Many of the people we work with are late-identified. They’ve spent years masking their struggles or feeling like they were just “lazy” or “unfocused,” only to realize there might be a neurodivergent explanation, like ADHD, Autism, or a specific learning style.

An evaluation isn’t something we do to you. It’s a collaboration. Your lived experience is just as important as the data we collect.

While a formal diagnosis can be a key to unlocking accommodations at school or work, our real goal is to provide you with self-clarity.

We operate from a neurodiversity-affirming lens. We aren’t looking for what’s “wrong” with you; we’re looking for how you’re built so you can stop fighting against your brain and start working with it.

Whether you’re looking for a formal diagnosis to access support, or you’re just tired of wondering why, we’re here to help you find the answers.
